Your redemption

How to judge a points redemption

The formula is simple: (cash price − taxes and fees on the award) ÷ points required × 100 = cents per point. The hard part is knowing what number is good. Points are a currency whose value depends entirely on how you spend them. The same balance can be worth 1 cent per point on a short domestic hop and 3 cents or more on a long-haul premium-cabin seat.

Rules of thumb

  • Redeem when value is high and cash prices are high — peak dates, last-minute trips and premium cabins.
  • Pay cash when fares are on sale — a cheap sale fare makes points look poor value, and you earn points on the ticket.
  • Watch surcharges — some partner airlines add large fees to award tickets that destroy the value.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good value for Aeroplan points?

Many Canadian travellers aim for about 2 cents per point or more on flights. Below roughly 1.5 cents, paying cash and keeping points for a better redemption is often smarter.

Should I subtract taxes and fees?

Yes. Award tickets still charge taxes and sometimes carrier surcharges. Subtract them from the cash price before dividing by the points required.

What are forgone points?

A cash ticket usually earns points, while an award ticket usually does not. Subtracting the value of points you would have earned gives a more honest comparison.
