Why distance matters when you hunt for deals
Fares are not priced by distance, which is exactly why distance is useful. When a 7,000 km flight to Europe costs less than a 1,500 km domestic hop, you know you are looking at a genuinely good deal. Comparing price per kilometre across options helps you spot value quickly.
Distance also drives comfort decisions. Above roughly 6–7 hours, an aisle seat, a bit of extra legroom or a stopover can be worth paying for. Below that, the cheapest basic fare is often fine if your bag fits the rules.
Popular distances from Canada
| Route | Approx. distance | Typical nonstop time |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto → Cancún | ~2,600 km | ~4 h |
| Montréal → Paris | ~5,500 km | ~6.5–7 h |
| Toronto → London | ~5,700 km | ~6.5–7 h |
| Vancouver → Tokyo | ~7,500 km | ~10–11 h |
| Calgary → Honolulu | ~4,700 km | ~6.5 h |

Frequently asked questions
Why is the actual flight time different from the estimate?
Jet-stream winds, routing around weather or restricted airspace, and airport congestion all change real flight times. Eastbound flights across the Atlantic are often faster than westbound.
What is great-circle distance?
It is the shortest path between two points on a sphere. Flights over long distances follow curved paths on flat maps because of it — which is why flights from Canada to Asia pass near the Arctic.
How accurate is the CO2 estimate?
It is a rough average per passenger for illustration only. Aircraft type, seat density, load factor and routing all change real emissions.
